14K Gold SHELL CAMEO Pin 4 HORSE Chariot +Couple Classic Antique Brooch Pendant
Set in 14 karat yellow gold, this hand carved vintage shell cameo (I think is sardonyx) is elegant and romantic.  The fine carving is highly detailed and the scene depicted is full of interest and dramatic tension.  Through skillful rendering of important details with great economy of line, the artist managed to convey a wealth of information despite the small scale of his "canvas".  Perched on a puffy white cloud, four horses (4!) stand at the ready, as if scarcely contained by the confines of their frame, each with one foreleg gracefully bent at the knee and their heads at different angles.  I love the way one horse holds his head straight up, lips parted, as if whinnying in protest at the delay.  Clearly they are raring to go and ready to prance across the sky if the lady (Goddess?) with the upswept hair who gently holds the reins will but give the signal.  The couple in the chariot appear to be engaged in rapt conversation and the man leans in close to her, one hand on his hip.  Surely they aren't just discussing where to go for dinner!  (Or even which Symposium, the drinking party of ancient Greece, to attend!)  Expertly carved in relief, the creamy white stands out against the darker background.  And it is incredibly detailed, from the folds in the people's garments, spokes in the chariot wheel and trappings on the horses to all their expressions and chiseled features.  Just look at it!  Simply exquisite.
Bezel-set, the fairly large brooch measures over 1/4" deep by about 1-5/8" wide by 1-1/4" tall, not counting the bail at the top.  It has the old style elongated pin stem and simple "c" clasp.  There is a bail at the top so it may be worn as a pendant as well as a brooch.  The bail will accommodate a chain about 1/8" - 5/32" diameter and adds about 3/8" to the overall height.
While not signed as to maker or gold content, it acid tests at least 14 karat.
The piece is in Excellent vintage condition with just surface dirt and light scratches as expected signs of age.  (The pin stem is ever so slightly bent but works just fine.)  It has a lovely vintage patina; cleaning and polishing are left to the buyer's discretion.
