Description
Up for auction here is an antique Sheldon woodworking vise with a patented quick release & tighten mechanism. During its earlier installation on a workbench this vise received a lot of use, as evidenced from the wear, dents, scratches, chips, dust, rust and paint spots. A coat of reddish varnish or paint was applied to the handle, front face and sides/tops of jaws. Please review all the photos. The vise weighs almost 25 pounds. Jaws are 7 inches wide by 3 inches tall. The overall length (under the bench) from the face of the stationary jaw back to the rear of the sliding bar is 12-5/8 inches; back to the rear of the mounting bracket is 7-1/2 inches.
Of particular note: the bolt that moves the "dog" up/down in the sliding jaw is missing. I think the dog is in the slot but frozen in place with grime/age. I did not attempt any rehabilitation, restoration or cleaning of the vise after I acquired it recently.
Edgar H. Sheldon was granted the patent for his woodworker's vise design on August 28, 1900.
I will carefully package the vise in a reinforced cardboard box and ship it from my local US Post Office. If the actual cost of shipping is lower than estimated in this listing, I will refund you the difference. UPS Ground is also an option if you prefer but could cost more. Another option is to arrange a local pickup in Hopewell Township, NJ (outside the municipal building/police station).
Good luck!
